Bandwidth is the sum of all of the data that enters and exits through any aspect of your hosting account. People visiting your site, uploading and downloading files via FTP, and sending and receiving email all contribute to your total bandwidth usage. Many small sites use less than 250 megabytes of bandwidth per month, while larger sites can consume several hundred gigabytes. Bandwidth usage affects the Internet as a whole.
Many technically oriented people apply a water metaphor to bandwidth usage. Any connection which can carry a large amount of traffic (water) is considered "a big pipe." Small sites may produce only a "trickle" of bandwidth usage. |
